These videos were experimental edits of footage I would record randomly while out on walks around campus. The footage was meant for larger projects and general testing, but I also assigned myself the challenge to make a cohesive music video out of solely the footage I gathered from one walk and an ambient song I liked as a platform to edit on, and not to have a particular plan beforehand. Because of this, the videos I ended up making were always clunky to a degree and varied in both length and quality, especially when certain shots didn’t work out, but in my view, these two are the best I put together. You’ll see some repeated shots/locations, simply because the process was all in service of practice. Nevertheless, considering I filmed and edited a lot of this stuff during all-nighters, they capture an unhinged, uncanny, insomniac atmosphere that probably befits a lot of us at university. Or maybe it’s just me.
The camera I used for these was not really meant for filming, so there was a consistent loss of focus, and seeing as the whole thing was handheld and improvised capture, it’s not exactly going to win awards for the cleanest or most stable filming, but I like to think I’ve made that part of the aesthetic. Anyway, I have a proper expensive digital camcorder now so expect a lot more of these soon.
